Ed Skrein has joined Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning in the second installment of Disney’s Maleficent franchise, which Joachim Ronning is directing. Skrein will play a villain in the film that’s based on the nemesis first introduced in the studio’s 1959 fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay which Joe Roth is producing. Production is slated to begin sometime this year. The first Maleficent was released in 2014 and broke records with its opening weekend of $69.4M and went onto to make $758.5M worldwide. Variety was first to report Skrein’s casting.
