20th Century Fox has their CinemaCon panel this morning in Las Vegas and they received a nice gift before stepping on stage: Deadpool 2 arrived on tracking and indicates an opening that could reach $150M; at least $100M+ over three-days. These are industry estimates, not from Fox.
Again, it’s very early, numbers fluctuate, but this is a great arrival three weeks before the pic’s May 18 release. Should the sequel open anywhere north of the previous chapter’s $132M, it will rep 20th Century Fox’s best domestic opening ever. Last week Fandango reported that Deadpool 2 is their biggest R-rated advance ticket seller in their 18-year history beating Fifty Shades of Grey, while Regal Cinemas also reported record sales. Deadpool 2 is considered the second event title of the summer after this weekend’s Avengers: Infinity War which many believe will deliver an all-time record opening, potentially beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9M).
The Marvel bawdy superhero is strong among males under 25, however, his scores are beating or are in sync with other superhero pics. In unaided awareness, which indicates how strong the buzz is among those who are unprompted in polling and a priceless stat on which studios buy their TV ads, Deadpool 2 has a 29 beating Logan (24, $88.4M), Suicide Squad (24, $133.6M), Deadpool (19, $132M) and coming in under Captain America: Civil War (32, $179M).
Definite interest for Deadpool 2 is at a 60, above Deadpool 2‘s 52 score, and Suicide Squad‘s 57 and under Civil War‘s 69 and under last summer’s kickoff Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (63, $146.5M opening).
