CJ 4DPLEX has opened its 500th 4DX location, with the milestone reached today with the newly opened Pathé Belle Épine Cinema in Thiais, France. The first film to screen at the new venue in the immersive premium format that includes motion seats and environmental effects like rain, fog and various scents: Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One.
4DX, which launched in 2009, now has more than 61,000 seats in 58 countries. In the past seven months, the volume of 4DX theaters has grown from 54 to 89, with the number of seats increasing from 7,000 to 11,000. The biggest push has been in Europe, where there are now 89 screens in 21 countries. It currently has 10 U.S. locations.
Seoul-based CJ 4DPLEX and Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé have partnered to roll out 50 sites by 2020.
“This is a meaningful milestone for us as we continue our journey to become the leading premium technology brand in the global cinema industry,” CJ 4DPLEX CEO Byung-Hwan Choi said ahead of a ceremony today in Thiais. “Our partnership with Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé is stronger than ever and we look forward to break more records together in the near future.”
CJ 4DPLEX is currently prepping the intro of its new “4DX with ScreenX” system later this month at CinemaCon. That tech utilizes the motion chair and environmental effects of 4DX and the 270-degree, multi-projection panoramic visuals of ScreenX. A quick look:
