If you weren’t around when Curtis Mayfield’s hit song from Superfly was inescapable in the early ’70s, this new trailer for Columbia Picture’s upcoming remake has some explaining for you.
“Power never stopped a bullet,” narrates Trevor Jackson as the lead character. “No car can outrun fate. But if you can play the game by your own rules and win, that’s Superfly.”
Based on the 1972 blaxploitation classic about a cocaine dealer looking to make one final sale, the Sony redo is written by Alex Tse and directed by Director X, best known for his Drake, Jay-Z and Rihanna music videos.
Jackson stars as Youngblood Priest, with Jason Mitchell, Lex Scott Davis, Andrea Londo, Jacob Ming-Trent and Omar Chapparo rounding out the main cast.
The main action of the trailer is preceded by a teaser in which the director and cast explain, among other things, why the original’s Harlem setting was shifted this time around to Atlanta.
“Atlanta,” says rapper Big Boi, “has got the juice right now.”
Produced by Joel Silver and Future, Superfly hits theaters June 15. Check out the trailer above and let us know what you think.
