Amazon Video has become the first SVOD service to publish its gender pay statistics in the UK and the numbers do not make for happy reading. The company pays men 56% more than women on a mean basis and 40.1% on a median basis.
The online broadcaster’s bonus scheme doesn’t make the picture any rosier for Amazon Video’s female employees with men earning 71.8% more on a mean basis and 67.4% on a median basis. This compares to national mean gap of 17.4% and a median gap of 18.4%.
However, the picture at its video arm doesn’t quite reflect the overall picture at Amazon in the UK, which employees around 14,000 people at its various divisions, including a massive retail operation. In fact, the business pays women 0.7% more in favor of women on a median basis, with men earning 6.1% on median basis. Overall, there is no gender gap on bonuses on a median basis with men earning 15.9% more on a mean basis.
As part of its reporting, which it is required to do as part of government regulations, it noted that it is “committed” to creating a “diverse organisation where employees thrive”.
“Career progression is merit-based with a structured yearly review and 360-degree feedback, through which we enable and encourage employees to openly discuss their development and career ambitions. We take professional and personal development very seriously and have a number of groups, mentoring schemes and training programs to support employee growth at Amazon. Employees are encouraged to try out different areas and functions,” it said.
Amazon touted its “unique” benefits offering to all staff, including private medical insurance and its parental leave programme. The firm also pointed to its transgender health benefits. “Amazon’s benefits also cover transgender services, including support for employees going through gender reassignment and associated mental health services for employees and their dependents, when enrolled,” it noted.
