EXCLUSIVE: David U Lee’s Beijing and LA-based Leeding Media has entered a multi-picture deal with sales and finance company Arclight Films. The partners will start off the relationship with the English-language Safecracker. Leeding will co-finance and oversee production on the heist pic which is being produced by Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo’s Initial A Entertainment.
Safecracker is billed as an action-thriller which centers on an expert in the field who is forced out of retirement when he’s framed for murder and must perform a complicated heist to prove his innocence.
Lau (Infernal Affairs) and Loo co-directed the 2014 Martin Scorsese-exec produced Revenge Of The Green Dragons and it’s conceivable they could team up behind the camera again here. The pic is eyed as a Chinese co-production.
Arclight Film’s CEO Gary Hamilton, Arclight’s Head of Production, Mike Gabrawy and Ying Ye through her Shanghai Aroura Alliance are producing alongside Leading Media CEO Lee and COO Steven Squillante (also an exec producer on Green Dragons) and Prato Productions’ Elyse Eisenberg. Lau and Loo are co-producing through Initial A.
“We are extremely pleased to be collaborating with the Arclight team on Safecracker, and are eager to, once again, be working with Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo with whom we’ve had such a successful creative and filmmaking relationship,” says Squillante.
Hamilton calls Safecracker “a smart and stylish genre film that we believe has significant global commercial potential.”
The deal was negotiated for Leeding Media by Charles Barsamian and for Arclight by Brian Beckmann. Arclight is handling worldwide sales.
Leeding Media has upped its profile lately, acting as a bridge between the U.S. and Chinese entertainment industries. The company acquires rights to films for distribution in China including most recently Only The Brave which releases tomorrow in the Middle Kingdom.
It also is active in indie film production and partners with American studios, filmmakers and rights holders as well as Chinese investors, distributors and media companies. It recently co-financed and oversaw production of the Johnny Depp comedy-drama Richard Says Goodbye with Global Road Entertainment and Cirrina Studios.
