Jenna Coleman’s Victoria may have already ascended to the throne and married Prince Albert but ITV’s royal drama shows no sign of slowing after the UK broadcaster ordered a third season of the big-budget series.
The new season will follow the next chapter in the monarch’s eventful life and will see Coleman and Tom Hughes, who plays Albert, both return. ITV-owned Mammoth Screen will produce the series for ITV and PBS’ Masterpiece. It will follow a feature-length episode, which will air on Christmas Day.
The second season averaged over 4M viewers for ITV, down slightly on the first season, but is still one of the commercial broadcaster’s most consistent, and most discussed, dramas. Creator Daisy Goodwin, who previously ran Sony-owned production company Silver River before she created the royal thriller, said that season three will begin in 1848, a “hugely dramatic and eventful” time for the royals as revolutions across Europe created uncertainty around the monarchy. “Viewers can expect more drama than ever before in the third series,” she added.

Victoria was recommissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama and is exec produced by Mammoth Screen boss Damien Timmer and Masterpiece’s Rebecca Eaton. ITV Studios Global Entertainment, which has sold the series to over 150 countries around the world, will continue to distribute globally.
Hill said: “We’re delighted that the nation has taken Victoria to its hearts. Filled with romance, political crises and family drama, Daisy Goodwin’s scripts bring this fascinating part of history to life so vividly and we look forward to regaling audiences with the next part of the illustrious Queen’s reign.”
Timmer added: “Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes shine as Victoria and Albert and it’s an honour to have them back for a third series, which covers a tumultuous period in our country’s history, filled to the brim with royal scandals, political skirmishes and constitutional crises, as new historical figures enter the saga to challenge Victoria and Albert as never before.”
