UPDATE: The Grammy nominations announced this morning included the Original Broadway Cast recordings of three ongoing hits: Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen, and the Bette Midler-led revival of Hello, Dolly! In addition, opera star Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the celebrated Russian baritone who died of brain cancer last week, was nominated in the Best Classical Solo category for Sviridov: Russia ast Adrift.
EARLIER: The soundtracks for La La Land and Hidden Figures tied with two nominations each as the 60th Grammy Awards noms were announced this morning. The La La Land team of Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul along with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone also scored a nomination in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category for the film’s “City of Stars”.
In the Best Comedy Album category, Dave Chappelle was nominated for The Age Of Spin & Deep In the Heart of Texas, along with other Hollywood notables Jim Gaffigan for Cinco; Jerry Seinfeld for Jerry Before Seinfeld, Sarah Silverman for A Speck of Dust and Kevin Hart for What Now?
Neil deGrasse Tyson, Bernie Sanders, Mark Ruffalo and the late Carrie Fisher all snagged noms in the Best Spoken Word Album category. deGrasse Tyson was nominated for Astrophysics for People in a Hurry; Sanders and Ruffalo for Our Revolution: A Future To Believe In; and Fisher for The Princess Diarist. Other nominees in the category are Bruce Springsteen for Born to Run and Shelly Peiken for Confessions of a Serial Songwriter.
La La Land and Hidden Figures were nominated in the Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media category, joining fellow nominees Baby Driver, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Moana: The Songs. In the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category, La La Land composer Justin Hurwitz was nominated, along with Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams & Hans Zimmer for Hidden Figures; Ramin Djawadi for Game of Thrones: Season 7; Hans Zimmer for Dunkirk and Jóhann Jóhannsson for Arrival.
Joining “City Of Stars” in the Best Song Written For Visual Media category are “How Far I’ll Go”, Lin-Manuel Miranda, songwriter (Auli’i Cravalho); “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker), Jack Antonoff, Sam Dew & Taylor Swift, songwriters (Zayn & Taylor Swift); “Never Give Up”, Sia Furler & Greg Kurstin, songwriters (Sia); and “Stand Up For Something”, Common & Diane Warren, songwriters (Andra Day Featuring Common).
Jay-Z led all Grammy nominees this morning with eight, followed by Kendrick Lamar, whose DAMN. album scored seven; Bruno Mars with six; and Childish Gambino (aka actor Donald Glover), newcomers SZA and Khalid, and producer No I.D with five each.
