SAG-AFTRA will host a members-only panel discussion next week about sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry. The panel, which will be led by attorney Gloria Allred, will be held November 14 at the union’s headquarters in Los Angeles.
“We are holding a dialogue with our membership next week on the issue of sexual harassment,” SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris said in an email to the union’s board members. “We are holding a panel discussion, led by fellow SAG-AFTRA member Gloria Allred and with a small, diverse group of industry leaders and members who have been outspoken on this issue and are willing to participate in this discussion with fellow members.
“I feel quite strongly,” she added, “that SAG-AFTRA should seize the opportunity presented for us to help reshape the workplace environment affecting our members and all professionals in this industry and will have much more to say about this at upcoming meetings.”
According to an advance program, Carteris will make opening remarks at the event, titled “A Conversation on Sexual Harassment and Abuse in the Entertainment Industry,” followed by a 20-minute “teach-in” in which Allred will talk about “What you should know about how to right the wrongs of sexual harassment.”
Allred will moderate a 50-minute “open conversation” with director Niki Caro, assistant director Amy Tan, actor Lisa Vidal and casting director Debi Zane on sexual misconduct and how individuals, organizations and unions can confront and address the issue.
This will be followed by a 45-minute “speak out” in which audience can speak out and ask the questions of the panelists. Allred and Carteris will then give closing remarks.
