UPDATED, 3:15 PM: The man who had barricaded himself in a motel near Hollywood & Highland is in custody, the LAPD said. The SWAT team and police helicopters have left the scene, but the area around the Motel 6 in the 1700 block of Whitley Avenue east of Highland will we remain closed until further notice.


PREVIOUSLY: The Los Angeles Police Department says a suspect wanted for assault with a deadly weapon is barricaded in a second-floor room of the Motel 6 on Whitely Avenue, just east of Hollywood & Highland. A SWAT team is on scene and communicating with the suspect after police responded to a “shots fired” call around 11 AM. All five floors of the motel have been evacuated, and Hollywood Boulevard is closed between Wilcox to the east and Cherokee to the west. Traffic is being diverted, and that is snarling multiple streets in the area including Selma and Sunset.

An LAPD source tells Deadline that officers are trying to keep the suspect contained; they believe is armed with a gun. No injuries have been reported. Police put out a tweet about the situation at 11:37 AM:
