Will Ferrell has signed on to star in a comedy move about eSports, the competitive gaming scene that is emerging from its sports-guy niche and gaining traction in pop culture. Legendary Pictures will produce the pic with Mosiac and Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions.
Michael Kvamme & Jordan Dunn will write the script, which will center on Ferrell as a member of a professional eSports team, and an anomaly in a sport where players usually retire in their 20s due to slowing hand-eye coordination. Evil Geniuses and Fnatic, two of the world’s top eSports teams in the world, are in talks to be part of the film.
The top eSports players are as young as 15, and can earn millions of dollars through prize money, endorsements and streaming as the sport has spread to pro leagues and arenas where gameplay is shown on giant screens. The 2015 League of Legends finals had more viewers than the World Series or NBA Finals.
Mosaic and Gary Sanchez are producing with Patrick Connelly and John Beach of Gravity Squared co-producing. Legendary’s partner Universal will handle worldwide distribution outside China.
Ferrell, now shooting Holmes & Watson with John C Reilly for Sony, is repped by UTA and Mosaic. Kvamme and Dunn, who just sold their spec Operation: Prince Of Freedom to Fox with Gary Sanchez and Chernin Entertainment producing, is with Mosaic and Verve.
