CBS’ new comedy multi-camera workplace comedy series Superior Donuts, starring Jermaine Fowler and Judd Hirsch, will launch with a special preview on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8:30 PM behind the network’s flagship comedy series The Big Bang Theory. The following Monday, Feb. 6, Superior Donuts will move into its regular slot, Monday at 9 PM, currently occupied by 2 Broke Girls. The veteran sitcom will slide to 9:30 PM, succeeding The Odd Couple, which will have wrapped its 13-episode third season the week before.
With Superior Donuts, CBS goes for a dessert-themed 9-10 PM Monday block of shows about a donut shop (Superior Donuts) and cupcake business (2 Broke Girls). The network’s decision not to slot Superior Donuts permanently on in the Thursday 8:30 berth shows that it has faith in freshman The Great Indoors, which has been a so-so ratings performer, getting a partial back order for a 19-episode first season.
Meanwhile, by shifting 2 Broke Girls to 9:30 PM, CBS is likely trying to shore up drama Scorpion, which has posted major ratings declines in its move to 10 PM, probably not helped by the anemic lead-in from CBS’ worst performing comedy series, The Odd Couple, which did not get a back order. 2 Broke Girls should be able to provide stronger lead-in support at 9:30 PM. Scorpion, which still has improved the 10 PM time period, is owned by CBS and an important series for the company with solid international sales and off-network sale potential.
Superior Donuts, which will follow another new CBS series that has not impressed, Man With a Plan, chronicles the relationship between the gruff owner (Hirsch) of a small donut shop, his enterprising new young employee (Fowler) and their loyal patrons, in a quickly gentrifying Chicago neighborhood. Based on the play by Tracy Letts, the comedy also stars Katey Sagal, David Koechner, Maz Jobrani, Anna Baryshnikov, Darien Sills-Evans and Rell Battle. Bob Daily, Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan, Mark Teitelbaum, John Montgomery, Michael Rotenberg, Josh Lieberman and Jermaine Fowler are the executive producers for CBS Television Studios.
