Perhaps one of the more unlikely participants in this year’s big all-day awards-season event The Contenders Presented By Deadline is the raunchy and very adult animated feature Sausage Party, which Sony Pictures brought to showcase in front of a packed DGA theater full of Oscar and key guild voters.
Star and creative force Seth Rogen along with director-producer Conrad Vernon talked about the inspiration for what Vernon said was pitched as “a story about a group of sausages trying to escape their packaging to screw some buns.” Rogen explains a different style of humor had to be used to get to their core themes of religion, sociology, theology and death (!)), and both talk about Sausage Party hopefully helping bring back this form of animation that was a staple for the likes of Ralph Bakshi. Rogen also addresses the question about suddenly finding himself with a possible awards contender.
