The Weinstein Company’s Lion won the Best Positive Film award from the Positive Planet Foundation during the organization’s annual ceremony tonight in Paris. The group is a fixture at the Cannes Film Festival, where it spearheads “Positive Film Week” at the fest.
The France-based foundation’s goal is to support entrepreneurial initiatives, humanitarian projects and films around the world that spread a positive vision of the world of tomorrow.
Lion, starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman, tells the true story of a lost Indian child adopted by an Australian couple who finds his biological family years later with the help of Google Earth. The film mixes English, Hindi and Bengali dialogue. Luke Davies adapted the screenplay.
The Garth Davis-directed pic bowed strongly over the Thanksgiving weekend and continues its expansion this week as part of its awards-season ramp-up. TWC says it plans to have the movie, which just nabbed six Critics’ Choice Award noms, in 600-650 locations by Christmas.
