Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to Basket Case, an hourlong drama based on the bestselling 2002 book by Carl Hiaasen, from White Collar and Graceland creator Jeff Eastin, and Life in Pieces executive producer Jason Winer. 20th Century Fox TV, where Eastin and Winer are under overall deals, is the studio.

Alfred A. Knopf

Written by Eastin based on Hiaasen’s book, published by Alfred A. Knopf, Basket Case centers on former hotshot investigative reporter Jack Tagger, who’s now an obituary writer — and a mess, consumed by his own mortality. Joined by a dysfunctional group of friends, this redemptive crime drama uncovers the sun, fun, and seedy underpinnings of South Florida. Eastin, Winer and Hiaasen executive produce.

This is Eastin’s second drama sale to Fox this season. He also has Miracle Commission, which also has a script commitment with penalty.

Meanwhile, at Fox Winer also executive produces through his company, Small Dog Picture Co., Token White Male, an hourlong dramedy from writers Carter Covington and Robin Schiff, workplace comedy Type-A, written by Lesley Wake Webster, and medical workplace half-hour This Might Hurt, written by New Girl co-executive producers Ethan Sandler and Adrian Wenner. All have script commitment plus penalty. Winer is repped by ICM Partners and Mosaic.
