Looks like #RideOrDie might be getting especially literal in the eighth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, which finally got a title this week – The Fate of the Furious (we approve, hard). And following up that very excellent title comes the first official trailer for the film and, as trailers go, it’s glorious. Explosions, betrayal, Dominic cheating on Letty (!), melodrama and of course, lots of cars going really fast. Watch it below now.
After 7 films bringing team Toretto – the criminals-turned-heroes led by Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto – together, The Fate of the Furious blows all that up by having Dom turn… evil? It appears so, thanks to the machinations of a mysterious terrorist (played by Charlize Theron) who recruits Dom and sets him against his family. Forced to go against their former leader, they end up working with one of their greatest enemies to take him down.
The Fate of the Furious is intended to kick off what Diesel has said more than once will be a final trilogy within the franchise that will bring it to a conclusion with the 10th film. What better way to do that than send Dom careening into the dark side? I’m sold, though I hope in the end, Dom remembers there’s always room for family (or, if you prefer, he remembers to live life one quarter mile at a time. Honestly? I’ll just stick with #RideOrDie.) I can’t speak for everyone but guaranteed I’ll be seeing this one the earliest possible second.
Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell from Furious 7 and before, coming off the last pic’s $1.5 billion worldwide haul. Newcomers are legit: Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren and Scott Eastwood. F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) has taken over the wheel to direct.
