ABC is developing Lawyer Up, a legal comedy series from Office Christmas Party co-writer Justin Malen and Scott Stuber, Jamie Tarses and Dylan Clark’s Bluegrass FanFare. ABC Studios, where the company is based, is the studio.
Written and co-executive produced by Malen, the single-camera Lawyer Up centers on a straight-laced, recent Harvard Law grad who fails the bar exam which forces her to work for her two morally ambiguous older siblings in their small law firm.
Malen, who worked as a corporate lawyer at a prestigious firm before becoming a screenwriter, drew on that personal experience as inspiration for the show, which Stuber, Tarses and Clark will executive produce.
The project reunites Malen, who co-wrote Office Christmas Party with Laura Solon and Dan Mazer, and the film’s producer Stuber. The raunchy comedy, which opened December 9, has amassed almost $22 million in its first five days of release. Malen is repped by Verve as well as Chris Fenton and Chris Cowles at DMG Entertainment.
Bluegrass FanFare has set up a number of projects at ABC since its launch three months ago, including a hot single-camera comedy about a hip-hop artist-turned-mayor from writer Jeremy Bronson and Hamilton co-star Daveed Diggs, which has a cast-contingent pilot production commitment; a single dad comedy from Breckin Meyer; and Women In Black, a comedic drama from Amy B. Harris.
