A Hollywood legend came to our big all-day awards season event, The Contenders Presented By Deadline, when I sat down with Warren Beatty to discuss his first film in 15 years, Rules Don’t Apply, and the first he has written, directed, produced and starred in since Bulworth in 1998.
In front of a packed invitation-only crowd of Academy and key guild voters November 5 at the DGA theater, Beatty talked about his long-gestating project involving his half-century interest in Howard Hughes. He says that though he plays Hughes, his movie is not a biopic but rather about sex and love, American puritanism and the Hollywood of the late 1950s — the same era that Beatty himself came to town. He also has high praise for his cast, including newcomers Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich as well as the who’s-who supporting cast of industry veterans.
