Martin Sheen and J.K. Simmons have boarded the animated feature The Boxcar Children: Surprise Island as voice cast for Legacy Classics and Shout! Factory. The pic is currently in production. Sheen steps into the role of James Alden, and Simmons will voice Dr. Moore.
The picture is the first of three new animated films to come out of a long-term co-production and film distribution partnership between Shout! Factory and Legacy for a slate of new family movies. Timed to the 75th anniversary of The Boxcar Children, written by Gertrude Chandler Warner and one of the best-selling children’s book series of all time, Shout! Factory and Legacy are working with book publisher Albert Whitman & Company, with an eye toward launching the first movie in fall 2017.
Sheen and Simmons join other voice cast members Joey King (Independence Day: Resurgence), Carter Sand (Frozen), Gil Birmingham (Twilight), Griffin Gluck (Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life), Stephen Stanton (Star Wars Rebels) and Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave) as Violet.
Dan Chuba and Mark Dippé are directing the film from a screenplay written by Chuba. The project is being produced by Legacy Classics and co-produced by Shout! Factory, Albert Whitman & Company and Blueberry Pictures.
