EXCLUSIVE: Jessica Rothe has signed on to star in the musical adaptation of the 1983 romantic comedy Valley Girl, which is being helmed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg for MGM. The script was penned by Amy Talkington and Matt Smith is attached to produce with filming slated to begin next year.
The remake follows Julie (Rothe), a sweet-natured San Fernando Valley girl whose world and values are rocked when she falls hard for a punk rocker from Hollywood. Martha Coolidge directed the original film that starred Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman.
Rothe can be seen in another musical, Lionsgate’s upcoming Emma Stone-Ryan Gosling starrer La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle, which will get an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release on December 9. She recently wrapped production starring opposite Alex Roe in the romantic feature Forever My Girl and is in production on Christopher Landon’s horror pic Half to Death for Blumhouse. Other projects include The Masterpiece directed by James Franco, Please Stand By with Dakota Fanning and Toni Collette and Nico Sabenorio’s drama Juveniles. On the TV side, she starred in MTV’s Mary + Jane, which premiered its first season in September.
