BREAKING: Emilia Clarke, known for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, has joined the upcoming untitled Han Solo Star Wars movie helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as Solo and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, the highly anticipated stand-alone film is set, like this December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy. It’s set to hit theaters in 2018.
No plot details have been revealed, but the film will depict the early adventures of the smuggler before his fateful meeting with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker in the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars: A New Hope. Speculation from fans is that the film may show how Han Solo and Chewbacca became partners, and the card game in which Solo won the starship Millennium Falcon from Calrissian.

Clarke’s role has not been revealed, but it’s worth noting for the curious that Han Solo’s backstory was previously covered in a trilogy of Star Wars Expanded Universe novels released in the late 1990s that included a doomed romance with a rebel spy. The Star Wars Expanded Universe was removed from official canon after Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, though some elements from those novels have made their way back into official recognition since then.
