
The International Documentary Association has announced nominations and creative recognition awards for the 2016 IDA Documentary Awards. The 32nd edition of ceremony honoring nonfiction filmmaking is set for Friday, December 9th at the Paramount Studios Backlot in Los Angeles.
The IDA will honor five filmmakers and documentary luminaries. Lyn and Norman Lear will receive the Amicus Award for their work supporting documentary film and free speech. Stanley Nelson is reciving the Career Achievement Award for his work documenting the African American experience. The Pioneer Award is going to Ally Derks in recognition of her work founding and building the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA). And director Nanfu Wang is getting the Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award.
In the competition categories, nominees Best feature include: Ava DuVernay’s 13th, documenting the history of the 13th amendment and injustices African Americans endured during that time; Camerperson, Kirsten Johnson’s catalogue of her work behind the camera; Fire At Sea, from Gianfranco Rosi documenting the intersection of the migrants’ dangerous Mediterranean crossing and life of the ordinary islanders; I Am Not Your Negro, Raoul Peck’s exploration look at the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr,; O.J.: Made In America; and Weiner, Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg’s documentary of the rise and fall of Former Rep. Anthony Weiner.
