SPOILER ALERT: This article contains details of Sunday’s Season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead.

Producers of AMC’s monster hit series The Walking Dead said they shot multiple versions of the pivotal death scene involving top bad guy Negan that took place during the Season 7 premiere Sunday. It was mostly done to deter spoilers from the actual brutal outcome of who bought the farm at the business end of Negan’s bat, and it worked — the uncertainty helped persuade 17 million viewers to tune in Sunday night.

Maybe now that the truth is finally out there (we won’t tell you here who died, but we told you here), someone in the TWD camp thought it safe to drop one of those alt-versions on YouTube — and so it appeared today. The scene, though grainy, is equally brutal and features Lauren Cohan’s Maggie. AMC had no comment about the supposed alternative footage.

The who-got-whacked guessing game had reached new heights in recent weeks after AMC hyped the resolution of the Season 6 cliffhanger all summer. Adopting a practice that HBO and Game of Thrones have employed for the past few years and that TWD itself has used for past season finales, AMC did not make any screeners available for review, setting the stage for maximum shock value.
