This is a timely project, in light of the recent unrest following police shootings in North Carolina and California. ABC has put in development Protect & Serve, a drama from the Secrets & Lies duo of executive producer/showrunner Barbie Kligman and executive producer Aaron Kaplan.
Written by Kligman and her husband, actor Billy Malone (Murder in the First), Protect & Serve, from ABC Studios and Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, is set in the aftermath of a riot in an American city triggered by the shooting of an unarmed man by cops. The police department is dismantled and a newly appointed police chief is tasked with rebuilding from scratch. The task is daunting, but with his unwavering faith in people and the community, and a brand-new optimistic approach — there is hope.
Kligman, Kaplan and Dana Honor executive produce.
Protect & Serve stems from Kligman’s overall deal at ABC Studios. Before adapting the Australian series Secrets & Lies and running the ABC version, she spent three years on Shonda Rhimes’ Private Practice, rising to executive producer/co-head writer in the final season and was a co-executive producer on The Vampire Diaries. She is repped by WME and attorney Bruce Gellman.
At ABC, Kapital Entertainment also has Sam Sklaver’s comedy Charlie Foxtrot, which has a put pilot commitment; the DJ Nash comedy Losing It; Hilary Winston’s Next Summer, based on a Norwegian format; dramedy House of Moore; and Laura Krafft comedy The Favorite. Additionally, the company has new ABC comedy series American Housewife and returning Secrets & Lies. All projects are with ABC Studios.
