The project, based on the 2009 Icelandic series Réttur, is written/executive produced by Eli Attie (House) and executive produced by This Is Us‘ John Requa & Glenn Ficarra and Scripted World’s Rob Golenberg & Alon Aranya (Hostages, Betrayal). Requa and Ficarra, who directed the pilot for This Is Us, exec produce Infamous alongside their Zaftig Films partner and fellow This Is Us exec producer Charlie Gogolak as well as the original series’ producer Kjartan Thor Thordarson of Sagafilm. 20th TV, where Zaftig and Attie have overall deals, is the studio.
In Infamous, a fast-rising hotshot attorney is jailed for a murder he doesn’t remember, and believes he didn’t commit. Six years later, he’s released on a technicality — which doesn’t mean that he’s innocent, or that his old life wants him back. He wanted to be famous; now he’s infamous. He re-enters his family firm to find his brother’s taken his seat at the table — and also his fiancée. While solving cases each week, he’ll do anything to find out what really happened that fateful night, and who might have set him up. And he changes the ways of the family firm, whether they like it or not.
This is the second time Golenberg & Aranya and their format-focused Scripted World have teamed with 20th TV to develop an U.S. adaptation of Réttur. Four years ago, the project, titled Ritter and described as “Jerry Maguire in a law firm,” with Homeland‘s Alex Cary and Howard Gordon, also landed at NBC with significant penalty.
The original series, created by Sigurjón Kjartansson, ran for three seasons. You can watch a trailer with English subtitles below.
Attie worked in politics, serving as speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore, before making the switch to television. He has worked on such series as The West Wing and House. Under his overall deal with 20th, he is writing for the studio’s new Fox drama Pitch, co-crated by This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman. On the feature side, Attie, repped by WME and Jackoway Tyerman, was named to the 2009 Black List for his screenplay Smile Relax Attack.
This Is Us has been the highest-rated new series in adults 18-49 so far this fall and has received a full-season order. On the feature side, Requa and Ficarra most recently directed Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and Focus, both of which were executive produced by Gogolak. Zaftig is repped by CAA and attorney Jeff Frankel.
