In one of the more intriguing team-ups this development season, Glee and Scream Queens co-creator Ian Brennan has partnered with Juno scribe Diablo Cody for a comedy series produced by America’s Got Talent star Simon Cowell. In American Idol alum Cowell’s return to Fox, the project has landed at the network with a put pilot commitment. 20th Century Fox TV produces with Cowell’s Syco Entertainment.
Written by Brennan and Cody, the untitled single-camera comedy centers on Marion Lolo, who has 26 synchronized swimming medals, one restraining order against her and zero friends. Brennan, Cody and Cowell executive produce with Syco’s Adam Milano.
This is one of several comedy projects with a female lead that Fox has put in development as it is looking to expand in that area. The network already has New Girl, to be joined in January by The Mick, starring Kaitlin Olson.
Cody also is writing/executive producing comedy Raised by Wolves, produced by Berlanti Productions, which has a scripted commitment plus penalty at ABC. She is repped by WME, MXN Entertainment’s Mason Novick and attorney Jeff Frankel.
Brennan, who performs weekly at LA’s UCB Theatre, co-wrote and starred with Leigh Whannell in Sundance feature Cooties, acquired by Lionsgate. He also is developing the sci-fi feature film Rifts based on the role-playing game by Kevin Siembieda with Bruckheimer Films. Brennan is repped by WME and attorney Amy Nickin.
Cowell, who recently inked a new deal with NBC to remain a judge on AGT through 2019, is with WME and attorney Sam Fischer.
