No there won’t be a sequel to STX Entertainment’s $180 million global hit Bad Moms, but rather the spinoff movie Bad Dads which will hit theaters on July 14, 2017. The studio will be revealing casting details in the coming weeks, and STX said it will also develop cross-platform opportunities for the Bad parents brand too.
“Where other studios have automatically green lit traditional and significantly more expensive sequels, STX has determined those sequels on average are grossing 68% less than the originals,” STX said in announcing the new movie. “Instead, STX has chosen to focus on extending consumer passion for the Bad Moms brand with a series of film spinoffs, a reality television show, short form digital content, and a robust consumer products program.”
On July 14, Bad Dads will serve as counter-programming to 20th Century Fox’s four-quad War For The Planet Of The Apes.
Bad Moms was directed and written by The Hangover writers Scott Moore and Jon Lucas off an estimated reported production cost of $20M. The raunchy femme comedy opened against Universal’s Jason Bourne on July 29 and made $23.8M in its first weekend and has yielded a 4.7 multiple to date at the domestic B.O. with $112.86M.
