Continuing its dive into originals, Acorn Media Enterprises has partnered with All3Media International and the BBC as the North American co-producer on period drama Close To The Enemy. Jim Sturgess, Alfie Allen, Alfred Molina, Angela Bassett and Freddie Highmore star in the seven-part series from Stephen Poliakoff (Perfect Strangers, Dancing On The Edge).
Coinciding with the BBC broadcast, the drama will make its U.S. debut on streaming service Acorn TV in November/December. This is a project that Starz had originally acquired in 2015. They are no longer involved.
Close To The Enemy is set in a bomb-damaged London hotel in the aftermath of WWII and centers on intelligence officer Captain Callum Ferguson (Sturgess). His last task for the Army is to ensure that a captured German scientist, Dieter (Inglourious Basterds‘ August Diehl) urgently starts working for the British RAF to develop the jet engine. Callum uses unorthodox methods in his attempt to convince Dieter and the two form a friendship. But tensions soon arise, as all is not as it seems.
Lindsay Duncan (The Honourable Woman), Robert Glenister (Hustle) and Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) also star.
The mini is a Little Island Production in association with Endor Productions for BBC Two and Acorn Media Enterprises in association with All3Media International. Executive Producers are Helen Flint and Hilary Bevan Jones.
Acorn’s other originals include Agatha Raisin, Agatha Christie’s A Witness for the Prosecution, Striking Out and The Level.
