Netflix has dropped the trailer for Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th, which was chosen to open the New York Film Festival on Friday — becoming the first ever nonfiction feature to do so.
13th, whose title refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution outlawing slavery and involuntary servitude “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted,” examines through the country’s history how the U.S. produced the highest rate of incarceration in the world, with the majority of those imprisoned being African-American.
The film debuts on Netflix and bows in limited theaters October 7.
