Days before NBC’s Lester Holt is scheduled to moderate the first presidential debate, Full Frontal’s Samantha Bee pondered why Americans know GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump is a bigot but “just don’t care.”
“A lot of voters decided racism and sexism are not great, but they’re not a deal-breaker,” she said Monday night on Full Frontal.
As to why so many Americans think “playing footsie with fringe hate groups” is not a disqualifier from polite society, much less the White House, the TBS star suggested “maybe because that’s the message they get from entertainment giants like NBC,” which, Bee said, continues to “tacitly condone … a race-baiting demagogue.”
“To their credit, NBC did sever ties with Trump after he called Mexicans ‘rapists’ – if, by ‘severing ties’ you mean inviting him on their flagship comedy programs to show millions of Americans what a fun guy he is. … I guess because ratings matter more than brown people,” Bee charged.
“Sure he’s making life palpably dangerous for Muslims and immigrants, but hey — he’s good entertainment!”
Bee delivered a too-late-now message to NBC: “Here’s a thought; when Holocaust survivors are telling you, ‘Hey this guy gives me déjà vum’ maybe don’t invite him up into your house to play with your adorable children.”
And, by “adorable children” Bee means Jimmy Fallon, who hosted Trump on The Tonight Show last week.
“Trump can be a total sweetheart with someone who has no reason to be terrified of him,” Bee said. “I notice there were no cutaway shots to the Roots. I wonder why.”
