This year marks 20 years since the six-year-old beauty queen was found dead in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder on December 26, 1996. In 1999, a grand jury recommended indictments against Ramsey’s parents, but district attorney Alex Hunter did not sign the indictments and decided not to take the case to trial. In 2008, Hunter’s successor, district attorney Mary Lacy, wrote a letter exonerating the Ramseys, based on DNA evidence. The case remains open.
