Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland has emerged as one of the top suppliers of drama series on television. With five dramas on the air, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away with Murder, The Catch and the upcoming Still Star-Crossed, the company is focusing on comedy, making a major push to expand into the half-hour arena this season. Leading off the effort is a single-camera half-hour comedy from Sex and the City alumna Liz Tuccillo, which has been sold to ABC with a script commitment plus penalty.

The untitled project chronicles what happens after one of two female best friends passes away. When your bossy best friend dies, who steps up to take charge?

Tuccillo is executive producing with Shondaland’s Rhimes and Betsy Beers. ABC Studios, where Shondaland is based, is the studio.

In addition to steadily building its drama slate, Shondaland has been taking shots in comedy, including the last seasons with Scott Foley and Greg Grunberg’s Toast, which went to pilot in the spring.

Tuccillo is repped by  UTA, which also reped Beers. Rhimes is with ICM Partners.
