John Malone’s Liberty Global and streaming giant Netflix have entered an agreement to integrate the Netflix app into advanced digital TV devices in more than 30 countries where the partners operate. The landmark multi-year partnership will see Netflix content become available to customers across Liberty platforms in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. This follows the successful 2013 launch of Netflix on Virgin Media in the UK after Liberty acquired the cable and broadband company.
The Netherlands will be the first new Liberty Global territory to launch Netflix on the Horizon box. Rollout to other countries will continue as technological upgrades are made through 2017.
The app will allow existing Netflix subscribers to log into their accounts via their televisions and eliminate the need for separate devices or switching between inputs and remotes. New customers can also sign up for Netflix via the app. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Liberty Global has 29 million cable subscribers and 11 million mobile subs. It is the world’s largest international cable and broadband company, spending $2.5B a year on licensed content for its video platforms. The Netflix deal complements that.
