EXCLUSIVE: ICM Partners has just signed Alex Lehmann, the director of Blue Jay, which is set to premiere during the Special Presentations section of the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. Lehmann, who is also a writer and cinematographer, started out as a TV camera operator on several series including The League, Quick Draw and Last Comic Standing.
He made his feature directorial debut on SXSW documentary Asperger’s Are Us and also served as that film’s cinematographer. The film, produced by the Duplass Brothers, was acquired by Netflix earlier this year.
Blue Jay, which stars Sarah Paulson and Mark Duplass (who also wrote the screenplay), is being distributed by The Orchard theatrically on October 7 before going to Netflix.
The film is described as “a tender and wise chamber drama about finding yourself adrift in mid-life, longing for something essential that you fear has been lost. The tension in this film, a stateside cousin to Before Sunset, is generated through the uncertainty surrounding the renewed chemistry between Jim and Amanda. It’s hard to know whether what they’re feeling is pertinent to their present lives or a matter of pure nostalgia.”
