Hank Azaria won back-to-back Emmys, and the performances that earned them could not have been farther apart. Last year, he nabbed his fourth Emmy for his voiceover work on the Fox animated comedy veteran The Simpsons. And tonight, he was recognized as best actor in a drama series for his stint on the gritty Showtime series Ray Donovan.
Azaria was not present to pick up the trophy, his first in a series acting category. Besides his four Emmys for The Simpsons, he also won for his supporting role in the TV movie Tuesdays with Morrie. Azaria’s only previous drama series acting nomination also was for a Showtime series, a lead actor in a drama series nom for Huff.
In the best actor in a drama series category, Azaria was nominated alongside veteran Swedish actor Max Von Sydow, who had been considered an odds-favorite to win for his role on Game of Thrones, last year’s winner Reg E. Cathey and two fellow House of Cards guest actors Mahershala Ali and Paul Sparks as well as Michael J. Fox of The Good Wife.
