Stuart Ford’s IM Global has been on a growth drive in recent months, accelerated by Tang Media Partners’ acquisition of a controlling stake in the company this past June. In its latest key move, the sales/finance/production outfit has set Oscar-winning producer Greg Shapiro as President of Feature Film Production.
This is a significant step for IM Global which is coming off of a strong Fall Festival circuit that saw the world premiere of Mel Gibson’s awards season contender Hacksaw Ridge. The company is a principal financier on that film with Cross Creek and Demarest. It acquired international rights for about half the $40M budget and essentially sold out in Berlin last year. IM Global is also partnered on Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Silence.
Shapiro, who won an Oscar for the 2008 Kathryn Bigelow-directed The Hurt Locker, will oversee all feature film production and financing activity. His other credits include Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty; Tom Hardy-starrer Child 44; James Gray’s The Immigrant; and the Harold & Kumar franchise.
His upcoming projects include the Untitled Kathryn Bigelow Project, currently filming in Boston; Weightless, directed by Jaron Albertin and starring Alessandro Nivola, Julianne Nicholson and Johnny Knoxville; and the TV series Graves, starring Nick Nolte and Sela Ward, produced with Lionsgate TV, which premieres on Epix in October.
IM Global is also involved in television. When Tang Media Partners assumed its ownership position, it arranged a new, expanded TV production joint venture, IM Global Television which also involves Tencent Holdings. The company is also digging deeper into China with PR and marketing unit GO Global, which is focused on representing Chinese media companies, brands and talent in the international festival arena.
Slated to start production for IM Global in early 2017 is black comedy Jackpot from director Will Gluck and starring Mila Kunis. Eon Productions’ UK set drama from Paul McGuigan, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, recently wrapped principal photography, with Annette Benning, Jamie Bell and Julie Walters.
Shapiro was represented in the negotiation by attorney Darren Trattner from Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein. COO Chris Bosco negotiated on behalf of IM Global.
