“I see you shiver with antici … pation!” That line from The Rocky Horror Picture Show defines the apparently serious pent-up demand for more Christian and Anastasia. Universal said today that its first trailer for Fifty Shades Darker, the second film adaptation from E L James’ juggernaut book trilogy, was viewed a record 114 million times in the first 24 hours after its release Tuesday. The old mark had been held by a little film called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with 112 million.
The number is taken from digital platforms including Facebook, YouTube and the like after the trailer arrived at 8 AM PT. In less than an hour, it had amassed 2.5 million views on the film’s Facebook page alone. North American accounted for 39.4 million views, the studio said, with the remaining 74.6 million coming from the more than 30 international markets that supported localized trailers. Topping the non-U.S. leaderboard were UK (18.9 million views), Brazil (12.4 million), France (9.8 million), Mexico (6.8 million) and Italy (6 million).
Tuesday’s trailer release was preceded by a 20-second teaser on Monday that primed fans for the full clip. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson star as the billionaire and his quarry in the film, which Universal opens February 10. Co-stars Jennifer Ehle, Luke Grimes, Rita Ora, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford, Max Martini and Marcia Gay Harden are back from the half-billion-dollar Fifty Shades of Grey, coupled with newcomers Hugh Dancy, Eric Johnson, Kim Basinger and Bella Heathcote. James Foley directs from Niall Leonard’s script.
