BREAKING: Storm Reid, a 13 year-old actress who appeared in the Academy Award-winning Best Picture 12 Years A Slave, will play the lead role in the upcoming Disney live-action adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time. The film is being directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma). Oscar-winning Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee scripted and Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand are producing the film, which is scheduled to start production later this year with other stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling. The three teased the casting of Meg on Twitter.
The project is a decided turn for DuVernay into the fantasy genre. A Wrinkle In Time involves a young girl whose government scientist father has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract, which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets. She takes part in a search for her father and sees some incredible creatures along the way.
Reid was picked after an extensive search for just the right girl. Reid first came onto the scene in 12 Years A Slave but then also appeared in American Girl: Lea To The Rescue and Sleight which premiered at Sundance this year. She also just landed a lead role in Judy Greer’s directorial debut A Happening of Monumental Proportions, which stars Allison Janney, Common and Bradley Whitford.
