Victoria, the Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece co-production for ITV and PBS, is polishing its crown for a UK debut on August 28. ITV has dropped a new clip from the first episode, with Doctor Who alum Jenna Coleman as the eponymous royal who’s on the cusp of coronation — and gets some interesting middle-of-the-night news with her Cavalier King Charles spaniel by her side. Check it out above.
The historical drama will occupy the coveted 9PM Sunday time slot that was home to Downton Abbey for six years on both ITV and PBS. The latter launches Victoria in January.
The eight part series, which is eyed as a returnable, is created by Daisy Goodwin and follows Victoria for the first three years from the time she is crowned queen in 1837 at age 18 through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert (Tom Hughes). Victoria went on to rule for 63 years, and was the UK’s longest-serving monarch until Elizabeth II overtook her in September last year.
International sales have been robust on the period piece and at TCA last month, cast and producers talked about relying on Victoria’s prolific diaries and drawings to create the story. Goodwin said of what’s depicted in the series, “It’s basically true.” The current royals are aware of the series — and are not unhappy about it, she and Masterpiece exec producer Rebecca Eaton confirmed.
