In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman), an underdog accountant with zero powers, comes to realize his city is owned by a global supervillain (Jackie Earle Haley) long-thought dead. As Arthur struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero (Peter Serafinowicz). Valorie Curry co-stars as Arthur’s his nurse sister Dot Everest, Yara Martinez is Ms. Lint, and Brendan Hines plays Superian.
“Visually and thematically this new Tick lives in the textures and rhetoric of today’s superhero saturation tsunami — and for it to be something you want to watch for hours, it needed to find its way to a story with heart and stakes, as well as absurdism,” Edlund said. “Is it a radically new hybrid of humor and super heroic action with characters you will care desperately about? Yes it is.”
A co-production with Sony Pictures Television, The Tick is written by Ben Edlund, directed by Wally Pfister and executive produced by Edlund, Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld.
Amazon comedy pilots I Love Dick, starring Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Hahn, and Jean-Claude Van Johnson, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, also start streaming August 19.
