Calista Flockhart is set to continue — albeit in a reduced capacity — on Supergirl as the series changes networks and filming locations in Season 2. An agreement has been reached between the actress and Supergirl producer Warner Bros TV. Flockhart, a regular in Season 1, will be a recurring guest star next season. I hear she flies tomorrow to Vancouver where production starts next week.
Ally McBeal alumna Flockhart has been very specific in her acting choices, only taking jobs that are based in Los Angeles where her family lives. That led to her casting in Supergirl, which was to film in Los Angeles. But after the first season, as the show was mulling a move from CBS to the CW, WBTV decided to move production to Vancouver where all other Greg Berlanti CW superhero series are being shot. The move helped trim the show’s production costs as it is going to its new network home.
Keeping Flockhart onboard with the new filming location had been problematic as she was not willing to uproot her family to move to Vancouver. She was not obligated to continue (Alyssa Milano similarly left ABC’s Mistresses when its production moved from Los Angeles to Canada). In the end, a compromise was reached, and the studio will fly Flockhart to Vancouver every few weeks or so. I hear Flockhart would do as many scenes as she could by commuting back and forth, likely banking material for multiple episodes in one trip north. I hear she would be paid per her original series-regular contract.
“Supergirl wouldn’t be Supergirl without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant,” said Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “We are so excited Calista has agreed to continue on the show when she can. We and the audience love to see her on screen.”
