EXCLUSIVE: Singularity, a futuristic comedy project from comedy writer Sonny Lee (Silicon Valley) and producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, heated up the cable/digital marketplace when it was taken out in May, sparking bidding. It has now landed at FX with a rare pilot order off of a pitch. FX Prods. will be the studio.
Conceived by Lee, the comedy is set in a future when artificial intelligence greatly surpasses human intelligence, resulting in profound changes to our society. The comedy is said to be similar in tone to Rogen and Goldberg’s disaster movie This Is the End, which is why Lee reached out to the duo for collaboration. Lee executive produces alongside Rogen and Goldberg through the duo’s Point Grey banner.
Rogen and Goldberg have been quickly expanding into the scripted series space with AMC series Preacher and Hulu pilot Future Man. Both projects are through Sony TV.
Lee majored in Economics at University of Pennsylvania but was drawn to entertainment. He got a job as a page at NBC that became an entry point to a writing career. Lee’s series credits include It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, 2 Broke Girls, Silicon Valley, and most recently ABC’s The Real O’Neals. He is repped by WME; Rogen and Goldberg are with UTA.
At FX/FXX, Singularity joins the recently ordered half-hour pilot written by and starring Cristin Milioti and Nina Pedrad.
