Just a reminder that Disney is dropping a brand new Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer tomorrow night during the 2016 summer Rio Olympics. The studio’s marketing team has been working closely with NBC, teasing short spots of this, sprinkled throughout this week’s Olympic coverage leading up to tomorrow night, both online and on broadcast. Talk about a reaching a wide audience. Last night, NBC reached a ratings high for the current Rio Olympics to date with a 9.9/33 among adults 18-49 in fast affiliates and 33.63 million total viewers.
Rogue One, opens on Dec. 16, and if exhibitors’ Christmas wish comes true, perhaps they’ll see another lucrative box office holiday. Last year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened to a record $247.96M, became the highest grossing movie ever stateside with $936.7M and pushed 2015 annual ticket sales to a record $11B-plus. To date, among trailer drops, Disney dropped a Rogue One trailer in the spring, and last month released a docu-trailer for the Gareth Edwards-directed movie during its London Star Wars Celebration.
