Oliver Stone wants you to turn off your smartphone while you’re in a theater watching a movie — which he surely thinks should probably be his upcoming Snowden, but that’s beside the point. Or is it? The Oscar-winning filmmaker taped a new PSA which, by the way, debuted in front of a screening of Snowden held during Comic-Con last month, in which he basically combines his extreme concerns about a surveillance society with a general concern about not being a jerk to other patrons during a film screening – along with an adorable cat video of course. Can’t say I disagree with him about any of that, though I’m probably not giving up my cell phone any time soon. How else can I let the NSA know about my taste in adorable cat videos? Watch Oliver break it down for you above.
Incidentally, the screening of Stone’s Snowden was followed by a Skyped-in chat with Edward Snowden himself – read about it here. The film, which details the life of the whistleblower and international fugitive from his brief stint in the U.S. Army through his decision to leak NSA documents detailing the agency’s blanket surveillance program, hits theaters September 16. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Logan Marshall-Green, Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schnetzer, LaKeith Lee Stanfield, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage star.
