Issa Rae, co-creator, executive producer and star of HBO’s upcoming comedy series Insecure, has closed a first-look producing deal at the premium cable network. Under the two-year pact, Rae will develop programming focused on diverse voices that would be targeted for all HBO platforms including HBO GO and HBO NOW.
Rae’s Insecure, which she co-created with Larry Wilmore, sailed through the pilot process at HBO. The series, which premieres Oct. 9, follows the friendship of two modern-day black women, Issa (Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) and all of their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations. Rae’s online content has garnered over 20 million views and nearly 200,000 YouTube subscribers. She has made a number of lists, including Glamour’s “35 Under 35″, Forbes’ “30 Under 30” (twice), Rolling Stone’s 23 Funniest people in America and People magazine’s “One to Watch” list for 2015.
Rae is reped by UTA, 3 Arts and Hansen Jacobsen.
