The actor/producer/writer/director whose next film I Am Not Madame Bovary starring Fan Bingbing will premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, is behind some of the most beloved comedies in the Middle Kingdom. He has been in the film industry there since 1994 and his films have accounted for almost $1 billion at the Chinese box office.
Some of his better-known work is The Dream Factory (2007), Big Shot’s Funeral aka Da Wan (2001) which starred Donald Sutherland and Paul Mazursky, The Banquet (2006), Assembly (2007),
Back To 1942 (2012), and the critically-acclaimed Aftershock which was selected as the Chinese entry for Best Foreign Language film at the Academy Awards in 2011. He also won the 10th Anniversary Special Award of the Asian Film Awards in Macau in March of this year.
