Last week we caught the first glimpse of Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sci-fi drama, Arrival, which is due to world premiere next month at the Venice Film Festival. Today, the full trailer has landed. Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker star in the film that Paramount acquired in a $20M Cannes deal in 2014, when it was still titled Story Of Your Life.
The Eric Heissere-penned script, based on a 1998 short story by Ted Chiang, centers on expert linguist Louise Banks (Adams) who is recruited by the military after a dozen mysterious spacecraft begin to hover over Earth. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks must communicate with the aliens to ascertain what they want and where they are from — but mostly if they are friend or foe.

Elaborating on the teaser we saw last week, the trailer above offers a partial look at one of the extra terrestrials as Adams’ Banks is determined to reach them peacefully through the power of language — getting them to understand that there is a difference between a weapon and a tool, for example. But with violence escalating around the world, and time running out, she takes a chance that could threaten her life, and possibly all of humanity. Renner plays physicist Ian Donnelly and Whitaker is the colonel who accompanies them to make first contact.
Paramount has U.S., Canada and China rights and releases domestically in a plum awards season slot on November 11. Producers are 21 Laps, FilmNation and Lava Bear Films.
