Filming has just begun in Cincinnati on Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. The psychological drama is a reteam for the helmer and his The Lobster star Colin Farrell. Nicole Kidman also leads the cast. Alicia Silverstone has now joined the lineup along with Tomorrowland‘s Raffey Cassidy and Bill Camp (Jason Bourne, 12 Years A Slave). Previously announced actors include ’71‘s Barry Keoghan and Sunny Suljic (The Unspoken).
Farrell plays Steven, a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behavior of a teenager (Keoghan) he has taken under his wing turns sinister. Kidman plays Farrell’s wife. Silverstone will play the mother of the boy. Lanthimos and his regular collaborator, Efthymis Filippou, co-wrote the film.
A24 grabbed U.S. rights to the pic in Cannes this year after also taking on The Lobster from Alchemy. That film was a success in Cannes in 2015, winning the Jury Prize and later going on to gross $9M in the U.S. Lanthimos’ previous effort, Dogtooth, won the Un Certain Regard prize at the same festival in 2009. It further scored a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination.
Lanthimos is producing The Killing Of A Sacred Deer which is also produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe’s Element Pictures (Room). Film4, the Irish Film Board and New Sparta Films are backers. HanWay Films has worldwide sales.
