Pop has given a series order to The Joey Mac Project, a scripted comedy series starring New Kids on the Block’ alum Joey McIntyre. The project, which had been in development at the network for over a year, has received an 8-episode order.
It is executive produced by McIntyre, his NKOTB bandmate Donnie Wahlberg, Jenny McCarthy, Tim Gibbons (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Paul Greenberg (Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris) and Jenny Daly (Storage Hunters).
As part of the development, The Joey Mac Project shot a short presentation/proof of concept featuring McIntyre, Wahlberg and guest star January Jones, which was screened at TCA today. The project hails from CBS TV Studios, whose parent company co-owns Pop with Lionsgate TV. It marks Pop’s fourth original scripted series, joining acquisitions Schitt’s Creek and drama Wolf Creek as well as comedy Nightcap, from Lionsgate TV,
Inspired by Joey’s real life as the grown-up boy band member and actor who seeks his next showbiz gig after NKOTB’s latest sold out tour, McIntyre plays a devoted husband, a loving father of three, and at 43, all he really wants is to be taken seriously as an actor. Instead, he is being offered to host a late-night talk show. Wahlberg plays his agent.
“I lucked out. What are the chances of me being cast as a character named Joey McIntyre?” said McIntyre. Added Wahlberg, “I’ve worked with Joey since we were kids, but seeing all of his many talents come together in this show – I’ve never been more excited.”
The series stems from Wahlberg and McIntyre’s relationship with Pop through the NKOTB reality series Rock the Boat, which aired 2 seasons.
At Pop’s executive session, president Brad Schwartz was asked whether it’s possible to spin off the fictional Joey McIntyre talk show into a real one. “Wouldn’t that be awesome?” Schwartz said. “It’s not the plan but if a happy accident happens, it would be incredible.”
The Joey McIntyre Project is produced by T Group Productions and CBS TV Studios.
