INXS label Universal Music Group is teaming with Searching For Sugar Man producer Passion Pictures on a feature-length documentary about the band’s lead singer Michael Hutchence. Richard Lowenstein (Say A Little Prayer), a close friend of the singer who directed many of the Aussie band’s music videos, is directing. CAA is repping North American distribution rights and worldwide deals.
“To know we have access to everyone and everything required to make such a film and the full support of UMG just reaffirms to us all that we can tell this story in the truest and most authentic way possible,” said Passion’s John Battsek. “That’s why we make documentaries in the first place.”
Hutchence committed suicide in 1997 amid the band’s 20th anniversary tour. His daughter Tiger Lily will be a beneficiary of the film’s proceeds, producers said.
Australia’s Seven Network aired a 2014 miniseries Never Tear Us Apart: The INXS Story, starring Luke Arnold as Hutchence.
